Coimbra University (Unesco World Heritage Site)
Not only students will be impressed by this place. Considered a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2013, it is one of the oldest universities in the world and one of the largest in the country. Created by King Dinis in 1290, its reputation has always accompanied it, and today it has 8 Faculties and approximately 25,000 students, with one of the largest international student communities. In the historic core of the University of Coimbra you can visit, among others, the University Tower and the incomparable Joanina Library, a true show of Baroque style gilded woodcarving.
Old Cathedral
This National Monument is one of the most important Romanic style buildings in the country, and was built in the 12th century. It is as impressive on the outside as it is on the inside, with its three naves. Its staircases are a classic of the Coimbra Fado shows during the academic traditions. If you are there at that time, don't miss it. If you visit at another time of the year, go in, sit down, and feel the History. After all, it's not every day that you can be in the place where the second king of Portugal was crowned.
Botanical Garden
In this garden you will be able to lose yourself for hours. Its 13.5 hectares of land were donated by Benedictine friars and became a study complement for the Natural History and Medicine courses at the University. There you will find the "Estufa Grande", one of the largest iron buildings in Portuguese architecture, unique vegetation and centennial trees, as well as many other secret corners of the garden. Machado de Castro National Museum
A visit to Coimbra is not complete without visiting one of the most important Fine Arts museums in Portugal, whose name pays homage to Machado de Castro, a sculptor from Coimbra. His works of sculpture in wood and stone reflect the evolution of art from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Outside you will also find an impressive construction from the Roman imperial age. Mosteiro de Santa Clara
It is time to visit the left bank of the Mondego in what is also known as the Convent of Santa Clara. It represents the Gothic style and was built in 1314. It is worth knowing all its extension and areas that were discovered in the late twentieth century, when it was recovered. To finish, stop by the Interpretive Center and learn all about its history and how it was renovated. In practice, it is a history lesson, but much more fun.
Quinta das Lágrimas
You will want to discover all the mysteries of "Quinta das Lágrimas", visit the fountains and the garden that is almost a museum of vegetation and rare trees that have lived there for centuries. In the center of the farm is a 19th century palace that is now a luxury hotel, perfect for a visit and a cup of tea. Also located on the left bank of the Mondego River, "Quinta da Lágrimas" have been the stage of the tragic love story between D. Pedro and D. Inês de Castro. Some believe that Inês still walks around the garden looking for Pedro. As you can see, an obligatory visit for inveterate romantics.
Portugal dos Pequenitos
Both the little ones and the grown-ups will enjoy visiting the first theme park in the country. Built in the mid 1940s, it consists of miniature versions of traditional houses and national monuments.
