TUI: what to visit?

Share
Very close to Valença, on the other side of the River Miño, is a beautiful and charming city in Galicia: Tui. Bordering Portugal, it is a place rich in history and an example of Gothic-Romanesque architecture. Wondering what to visit in Tui

Known as the gateway to Spain for many Portuguese, this destination is a popular starting point for hikers following the Portuguese Way to Santiago. Tui is a place to visit and stay. Culture and natural beauty combine to offer visitors an authentic experience rich in Galician traditions.

If you haven't visited yet, stay with us. In this article, we'll show you a two-day itinerary around the city. To start your journey, choose your Guerin rented cars and fasten your seatbelt!

TUI: Day 1,  first stop

MORNING

The first day in Tui is dedicated to historical and cultural exploration. In this city, as in all of Galicia, the religious tradition is very strong. That's why we suggest starting your morning with a visit to the Cathedral of Santa María de Tui. After admiring its imposing Gothic style, which you can see from the outside, explore the interior and climb the tower for a panoramic view of the city.

Afterwards, and because one of the most beautiful areas is the "Casco Antiguo", venture through the narrow streets and fall in love with the medieval architecture that characterizes this area. For lunch, we recommend stopping off in one of the many beautiful squares. There are few things better than eating tapas in a pleasant plaza..

AFTERNOON

In the afternoon you'll also have what to visit in Tui. At the Diocesan Museum of Tui you'll discover more about the region's religious history and sacred art. The collection there includes many pieces that reflect the history of the city.
Continue your walk to the Chapel of San Remo, a chapel dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. And because we're talking about a city by the river, end the afternoon with a walk to the International Bridge and enjoy the view of the River Minho and Valença.

NIGHT

For the evening, return to the historic center and try one of the restaurants there. The local dishes, such as "pulpo a la gallega" and "fabas", are not only typical but also delicious. You'll love them.

TUI: day 2, the journey continues

MORNING

The second day starts early. There is still more to visit in Tui and we suggest y ou set aside the morning to discover nature. The Monte Aloia natural park is a great place to go hiking and has extraordinary views over the Miño river valley and the surrounding mountains.

What to see in Tui is not a problem. There is a lot of biodiversity on this hill and the prehistoric and Roman remains you can find there have a history rich in legends. At the end of the morning, and as lunchtime approaches, we suggest you have a picnic in this area and rest for a while before returning to the center.

AFTERNOON

After returning from Monte Aloia, start the afternoon by visiting the Santo Domingo Convent. This convent was founded in the 13th century and its architectural style moves from Romanesque to the Gothic style that dominates the city.
When you finish your visit, it will almost be time to say goodbye. Take a walk to the Tui Municipal Market, where you'll discover the best-known and most delicious local delicacies, such as cheeses, wines and typical sweets. Any one of them is a perfect gift to take back to family and friends.

END OF THE DAY

Before the day ends, there's still time for one last stroll before returning home. Take advantage of the sunset hour to take a leisurely stroll along the riverbank before continuing your journey home.
