The arrival of cold and snow might be a reason to put on some slippers and spend the weekend on the sofa, but it can also be a fantastic opportunity for a snow vacation, for skiing or to practice other winter sports. Both in Portugal and in Spain, there are lots of incredible destinations covered whit snow during the winter.

Just 240 km from the city of Porto and about 294 km from the capital city, but rising to an impressive 1,993 meters of altitude, you will find the more than perfect scenario for your snow vacation this winter. With a natural park, a ski resort and a chance to try snowboarding, this is the perfect spot for your snow vacation this winter.

Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela

The Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela is an ecological reserve with about 100 thousand hectares, being the biggest protected area in Portuguese soil. It is located in the districts of Castelo Branco and Guarda, extending over the territory of six municipalities: Guarda, Manteigas, Gouveia, Seia, Celorico da Beira and Covilhã.

The best way to get there is by car. Renting a car may be a good alternative. We recommend an SUV or a 4x4 prepared for snow, so you can venture up the mountain on secondary and less travelled roads.

Skiing in the ski resort of Serra da Estrela

This is the only place in Portugal where you can go snow skiing, but you can also try other sports and activities, such as sledding and snowboarding. There are 9 tracks with suitable support systems and different levels of difficulty.

The resort offers practical lessons for those who are still debuting in this winter sport, and also you don't need to worry about equipment because you can rent everything you need: boards, skis, sticks and boots.

Sierra Nevada: Discover the highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula

In the South of Spain, in Granada and Almeria you’ll find the highest peaks of the Iberian Peninsula. With approximately 90 km of extension, the Sierra Nevada National Park is composed of more than 15 mountains with more than 3.000 meters of altitude. Mulhácen is the highest peak of this region.

The best option to explore this beautiful natural park is to walk along its 25 footpaths signposted according to their varying difficulty. For those who love bikes, the park also has 13 routes especially reserved for cycling.
