Tips for saving fuel with efficient driving
1. Use the first gear only to start the car
Shift into second gear as soon as possible. This gives better engine performance and avoids wasting fuel. Ideally, you should shift to second gear after 3 seconds or 6 meters of driving.
2. Use the highest gear possible
Higher gears allow for more efficient driving. By reducing engine revs, you can save fuel during the trip.
3. Turn off the engine when you are stationary
When you anticipate that you will be stationary for more than 60 seconds, turn off the engine. When you stop, the engine runs at idle speed, which makes it consume less fuel than when it is moving. However, with the engine running the fuel consumption is always higher.
4. Don't hesitate to brake
Protect yourself and, in case of potential danger, put your foot on the brake. Don't forget to maintain a safe distance from the car in front. By following this tip you save fuel and even reduce CO2 emissions.
5. Don't use neutral on the move
Driving efficiently means not using the neutral gear on downhill stretches. Not only is it dangerous, but it also increases fuel consumption. If the car is in motion, always keep one gear engaged.
6. Avoid shifting gears
On the road, it is crucial that your driving is fluid, without major speed swings and unnecessary braking. Did you know that increasing your speed by 20% can increase fuel consumption by 44%? Whenever you feel the urge to step on the gas pedal, remember this.
7. Check your tire pressure
Driving with tires below the recommended value increases fuel consumption by 1% to 2% for every 0.2 bar of low pressure. Therefore, when traveling long distances or driving with heavy loads, make sure that the tire pressure value is adequate. This way the benefits are doubled, you save fuel and extend the life of your tires.
Don't forget that there are also others that can affect the car's aerodynamics and, consequently, its fuel consumption. Open windows (when driving at over 80 km/h) or luggage on the roof are some examples.
