Village of Piódão: tradition preserved in the mountains

Share
In the heart of the Serra do Açor lies one of Portugal's best-known Schist Villages. Among the green mountains, the black stone of its houses contrasts with the colourful doors and windows that attract hundreds of visitors every year. With its authenticity so well preserved, come and discover the village of Piódão with Guerin.

Discovering tradition in the village of Piódão

A trip to the interior of Portugal can reveal some of the most beautiful architectural or natural discoveries. In the case of the village of Piódão, it's a perfect combination of the two. And Guerin offers you a wide range of cars to hire, so you always have the right one for your adventure.

Straddling the beauty of the Serra do Açor, this schist village hides amongst the nature that colours the landscape. Perhaps because of this natural fortress that surrounds it, it was the destination chosen by the writer Miguel Torga to, according to himself, say goodbye to his primitive country, where the essence of the culture, habits and other experiences of an ancient Portugal still found a home.

From those times, the village of Piódão continues to offer us a journey through the truly unique architecture that gives this small town its magic. Subject to intense restoration, the huts are now the region's ex-libris, situated on terraces in the hills. For those looking for tranquility, this destination is an option for all ages, in groups of friends or with the family, even for romantic getaways.

What not to miss in Piódão Village?

There are several springs that flow down the Serra do Açor, forming natural pools in the valley and which, in summer, delight kids and adults alike. So when you include the village of Piódão in your Portugal itinerary, don't forget to pack your bathing suit, as you won't want to miss the opportunity to take a dip here. If you prefer a good cultural trip, this village is called historic for several reasons. Its origins date back to the 13th century, with the name Casal Piodam, and due to a monastery, that once stood here.

In its place now stands the town's Mother Church, with its neo-baroque architecture that leaves no one indifferent, as it contrasts with the dark colours of Piódão, giving way to a white and blue façade. Inside you'll find an image of Senhora da Conceição made of limestone from the 15th century.  As you leave, you'll come across a square that leads you through the narrow streets that make up the village of Piódão and where you'll notice a stream of water running through an irregular channel, the Levada. The village has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1978.
