After all, how much does it cost to charge an electric car? This is the question that persists the most among those who want to join electrification. As there are many options, the price panorama is also more diversified than that of diesel or gasoline cars. Ready to see your question clarified? Start with Guerin.
How to calculate how much it costs to charge an electric car
Before choosing to rent an electric car at Guerin, you need to understand the conditions necessary to guarantee charging and the associated costs. To be able to reach a value, follow Guerin's tips. To start, consider the following variables:
Charging Type
The power you select directly influences the cost. Thus, if you opt for a fast-charging station, with a power of up to 50 kWh, the price will be higher than at normal charging stations, with a power equal to or less than 22 kWh. Do the math well, and calculate if it pays you to pay more for less time.
Charging location
If you choose to charge the car on the public network, the price of the kWh is defined by the tariff of each station. If you choose to charge the car at home, on a home charger, the kWh value is determined by the contractual conditions of the energy supply.
Fees and taxes
The type and location of charging are extremely important to be able to calculate how much it costs to charge an electric car. However, you also need to pay attention to fees and taxes. It is necessary to equate the amount taxed for energy and the rates of each region. This also includes consumption taxes, such as the Excise Tax on Electricity (IEC) and Value Added Tax (VAT).
Let's do the math
Now that you know all the conditions, it's time to know values. According to the European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO), of the European Commission, there are two general principles applicable to European countries, about the cost of charging an electric car: the first states that normal, domestic charging is the most economical alternative, and the second says that fast charging is currently the most expensive option on the market.
Thus, according to EAFO data, charging an electric car at Portuguese public charging stations is around a maximum of €0.43/kWh at a normal charging station and €0.79/kWh at a fast charging station. The cost of charging an electric car at home is around €0.21/kWh.
Now, let's get to the bottom of the matter, and make an estimate: how much does it cost to charge an electric car to do 100 km?
To arrive at a price, we must consider the values of various car models. Thus, we can assume an average energy consumption of 16 kWh/100 km. When considering the price of €0.21/kWh (average cost for home charging in Portugal), we concluded that a 100 km journey costs €3.36. Considering €0.43/kWh (average cost at a normal charging station), a 100 km trip already costs €6.88.
Comparing the cost of charging an electric vehicle with the cost of fueling a combustion vehicle: a gasoline car, with an average consumption of 5.8 liters/100 km and assuming the price of gasoline of €1.65/L, the trip costs €9.57
In the case of a diesel car, with an average consumption of 5.2 liters/100 km and assuming a cost of €1.60/L of diesel, a 100 km journey costs €8.32 (Reference values in July 2024).
