You want to rent a car? Find out how to pay tolls

#Safe driving You want to rent a car? Find out how to pay tolls

A very common question when renting a car from a rent-a-car like Guerin is to know what to do to pay tolls.

How to pay tolls: 3 ways of payment

How to pay tolls: Via Verde

The simplest way to pay for tolls is via the Via Verde service. You subscribe to this service and receive an electronic number plate device (DEM) which costs 26.5€. This device is placed in your car and is associated with your number plate, which allows you to pass through the tolls without having to worry about payment because this is automatically debited from the bank account associated with the contract.

If you are using a rented car or if you wish to rent a car, we recommend that you request the electronic toll service that works similarly to the Via Verde service and is much more convenient for you because you do not have to worry about subsequent payments.

Rent your car at Guerin, choose your car from a wide range of models and check-in online. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before the journey and you have 55 Guerin stations at your disposal throughout the national territory. Learn more about our electronic toll service here.

How to pay tolls: CTT, NaVE or Payshop

You can pay tolls by going in person to a CTT post office, a post office with NaVe or a Payshop agent. You can also pay by Multibanco reference, through the CTT website or app.

Don't forget that you can only pay tolls 48 hours after you have passed through the electronic toll and up to a maximum of five working days.

After this period your process is sent to the website Pagamento de Portagens and, in this case, you will have 30 working days to pay the tolls before the debt is collected by the Tax Department.

How to pay tolls: at SCUT concessionaries

You can always contact one of the concessionaries directly and ask for the payment details or a notification number. Afterwards you must go to a CTT post office and make the payment by postal order.

How much is the fine for lack of payment?

If you have not paid the tolls within the 5 working days after using the electronic toll service, you will receive a notification for payment from the concessionary, which gives you 30 days to pay before the fine is applied.

The fine, according to article 7 of Law 25/2006, of 30th June will have a minimum value corresponding to 7.5 times the value of the toll rate, never less than 25 euros. The maximum amount payable will be five times the minimum fine, 125 euros.

Guerin car: hire with electronic toll service

The most convenient and practical way for you is to rent your car with our complementary electronic toll service: which will avoid the headaches of having to pay the SCUT later at the CTT (Post Office) or via the Toll Payment website.

How does it work? This service has a franchise of 30 euros and a cost of 1.85 euros/day for a maximum period of 10 days and allows the amounts for the SCUT to be directly debited from your credit card. With this service, paying the tolls is automatic and allows you to travel without worrying about paying the electronic tolls.
