May 13: a journey through Portuguese religious tradition
Share
What does May 13 mean to the Portuguese? There's a lot to tell, find out all about it with Guerin.
The majority of Portuguese people are Catholic, and, for this reason, all religious celebrations are of great importance. May 13 is one of the most popular examples of the importance of religion for the Portuguese.
It was in Fátima, on May 13, 1917, that the Virgin Mary appeared to the three little shepherds. Before that date, Fátima was a little-known place in the Serras de Aire. Now, it is one of the best-known pilgrimage sites in Portugal and the world. For this reason, thousands of pilgrims set off every year on long journeys from their homes to Fátima to attend the candlelight procession and the celebrations in Fátima. Many do it out of love and faith, others to fulfill promises. This place has gained a religious mystique among the faithful all over the world.
This pilgrimage is seen as a moment of union, reflection, and connection with the country's religious history. It's a personal challenge of great sacrifice and faith.
The first pilgrimage to Fátima took place in 1927 and was intended to pay homage to the Virgin Mary and give thanks for the achievements made by the faithful through her intercession. Since then, the number of pilgrims, from all over the country and beyond, has been increasing and surprising.
With uneven terrain, rain or shine, the pilgrims cover hundreds of kilometers as proof of their devotion and faith. They take this walk to the end, overcoming all adversities.
The apparition of the Virgin Mary
The story begins in 1916, when the Angel appeared three times to the children and invited them to prayer and penance. A year later, on May 13, the three children, shepherds, were praying the rosary when they saw a bright light above a holm oak tree. The lady asked them to continue praying and to return to that place on the 13th day of the following five months, always at the same time.
The three little shepherds did as they were asked, and the lady appeared every time. At her last apparition, 70,000 people were present, and it was here that she asked them to build a chapel in her honor. The faithful complied and today the chapel welcomes thousands of people not only on this day, but all year round.
May 13 is also marked by a series of religious celebrations throughout the country. Thousands of believers attend masses and processions in the various towns and place candles and flowers in honor of the Virgin Mary.
Today, the Catholic complex in Fátima is made up of two churches, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the modern Basilica of the Holy Trinity. Between the Basilicas, the Candlelight Procession takes place, and some pilgrims walk the route on their knees to demonstrate their faith and sacrifice.
